Low Sugar Holiday Batch Cocktails for Hosts, Bars and Liquor Stores
Holiday party season is here. Office parties, open houses, private dinners, and the friends who always end up at your place. Whether you’re pouring for ten guests at home, two hundred at a buyout, or stocking the shelf for everyone else’s party, one question comes up every year: what do we serve the guest who wants something festive but is watching their sugar?
Here’s the thing most people don’t know. In a classic holiday cocktail, the sugar usually isn’t hiding in the vodka or the bourbon. It’s in the liqueur. Liqueur is the flavored, sweetened cousin of liquor (it’s also the word most of us can’t spell), and a traditional bottle is often where most of a drink’s sugar comes from.
Above Board makes premium liqueurs crafted without sugar. Same flavor, same body, same role in the drink. You don’t have to change how you drink, just what you pour.

Holiday batch cocktails for hosts
Batching is the secret to actually enjoying your own party. Mix a pitcher before anyone arrives, and you’re a guest at your own party instead of the bartender. Each recipe below makes about 8 drinks.
1. Revolver (the easiest to make ahead)
Bourbon and coffee, finished with orange. It’s stirred, not shaken, so you can batch it a day ahead.
For about 8 drinks
- 12 oz Above Board Coffee Liqueur
- 16 oz bourbon
- 24 dashes orange bitters (about ¾ oz)
Method: Stir with plenty of ice until very cold, strain into a bottle or pitcher, and keep it in the fridge. Pour over a large ice cube and express an orange peel over the top.
Single drink: 1 ½ oz Coffee Liqueur, 2 oz bourbon, 3 dashes orange bitters.
2. AB Espresso Martini (the one everyone asks for)
Real coffee bitterness and a thick crema on top.
For about 8 drinks
- 8 oz Above Board Coffee Liqueur
- 2 oz Above Board Simple Syrup
- 8 oz espresso, brewed and chilled
- 8 oz vanilla vodka
Method: Brew the espresso earlier in the day and chill it. Combine everything in a pitcher and keep it cold. For each round, shake a couple of servings hard with ice and double strain into chilled glasses so you get that foam. Top with three espresso beans. Best batched the same day.
Single drink: 1 oz Coffee Liqueur, ¼ oz Simple Syrup, 1 oz espresso, 1 oz vanilla vodka.
3. Mudslide (dessert in a glass)
Rich, chocolatey and cold. Set it out next to the dessert table.
For about 8 drinks
- 12 oz Above Board Cream Liqueur
- 12 oz Above Board Coffee Liqueur
- 12 oz vodka (or tequila, if you want to surprise people)
Method: Combine in a pitcher and keep it in the fridge until guests arrive. For each round, shake with ice and double strain into chilled glasses. Dust with a little cocoa powder.
Single drink: 1 ½ oz Cream Liqueur, 1 ½ oz Coffee Liqueur, 1 ½ oz vodka or tequila.
4. Arctic Star (for guests who want something bright)
Not everyone wants coffee at 9 PM. This seasonal favorite is fruity and gently spiced.
Single drink: 1 oz Above Board Orange Liqueur, ½ oz Above Board Simple Syrup, 1 ½ oz vodka, 1 oz pomegranate juice, 3 dashes cinnamon tincture. Shake with ice, double strain over ice and garnish with a sprig of rosemary. To batch it, multiply by 8 and shake each round to order.
5. Above Board Negroni (for the cocktail lovers)
Equal parts and easy to remember: 1 oz gin, 1 oz Above Board Bitter Orange Aperitif, 1 oz sweet vermouth. Stir with ice and pour over one big cube. Batch it like the Revolver, a day ahead.
Batching tips
- Batch the spirits and liqueurs, not the ice. Shake or stir each round with fresh ice so drinks don’t get watery.
- Keep everything cold. A chilled pitcher means every round tastes like the first. Anything with Cream Liqueur stays in the fridge.
- Prep garnishes before guests arrive. Orange peels, espresso beans, rosemary and a little bowl of cocoa powder make every drink look finished.
- Make a little extra. Holiday parties always run longer than planned.
For bars, restaurants and hotels
Holiday menus are being set right now. Office parties, private dining and buyouts mean big nights and fast service, and at every one of those tables there’s a guest who wants a festive drink without all the sugar. Give them something to order, and they’ll stay for another round.
- No new skills for your team. Above Board works in the specs your bartenders already know: Espresso Martinis, Mudslides, Revolvers, Negronis.
- Built for volume. Our Batching Guide scales each of these recipes to 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 gallon containers, so you can prep ahead for a buyout and keep the bar moving.
- An easy menu add. Try a small “crafted without sugar” section with one or two drinks, and keep it on through New Year’s Eve.
Above Board is already poured at more than 150 accounts, including Hyatt properties. Request a tasting and we’ll bring the bottles to your team before the rush.
For liquor and specialty stores
Every store has them: shoppers who walk right past the liqueur aisle because everything in it is packed with sugar. This holiday season, give them a reason to stop.
- New shoppers in the aisle. People watching their sugar have skipped liqueurs for years. Above Board brings them to your shelf.
- Every bottle builds a basket. Orange Liqueur with vodka and pomegranate for an Arctic Star. Coffee and Cream with vodka for Espresso Martinis and Mudslides. Bitter Orange Aperitif with gin and sweet vermouth for a Negroni. One bottle leads to three.
- An easy holiday gift. A bottle and a recipe card make a gift for the host who has everything.
- We help you sell it. Shelf talkers, recipe cards and in-store demos to move bottles through the holiday rush.
Stock up for Thanksgiving, holiday gifting and New Year’s Eve. Place a wholesale order, and tell us whether shelf talkers, recipe cards or a demo would help most.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the best sugar-free liquor for holiday cocktails?
In most holiday cocktails, the sugar comes from the liqueur, not the vodka, bourbon or tequila. Swapping in a liqueur crafted without sugar, like Above Board Coffee Liqueur or Orange Liqueur, keeps the flavor and cuts the sugar.
Can I make holiday cocktails ahead of time?
Yes. Stirred cocktails like the Revolver and the Negroni can be batched and chilled a day ahead. Shaken drinks like the Espresso Martini are best mixed the same day and shaken to order so they keep their foam.
Is the Cream Liqueur sugar-free?
Not quite. Above Board Cream Liqueur has 1g sugar per oz and contains dairy. Our Coffee Liqueur, Orange Liqueur and Bitter Orange Aperitif have 0g sugar per serving.
How many drinks does a batch make?
Each batch recipe above makes about 8 drinks. For a bigger party, multiply each ingredient by the number of 8-drink batches you need.
